Question for Experts in WEB

I have a website which is an information portal and I would like to start sending newsletter every month to almost 5000 emails Companies like www.dmxzone.com send emails to thousands on people every month, so I would like to know the best way to send emails. I tried to send using my account and after sending 500 emails, my web hosting company sent me a warning email to stop spamming.

I wasnt spamming. 5000 emails are the emails who actually signed up at my website to receive Newsltter , please help me as this is urgent the options I know are a. Buy a dedicated email server to send emails ( CANT AFFORD) b. Buy a software to send emails like – www.executeit.com or another software I tried which is the best but doesnt send is ATOMIC mail sender DMX done has a Dreamweaver extension called SMART MAILER, but its basically an ASP application sending emails one by one by picking from the recordset.

I bought the application but I havent tried it cos again my hosting company at the end of the day counts the number of emails sent in one hour. so basically again they will suspend by account cos I got a warning letter already. You’re goign to have to work this out with your hosting company. Any way you send an email through them, they have to be OK with it. There is no way you can send mail from your site w/o using your hosting company (unless you have a different mail server).

Web Hosting for Commercial Websites

Would anyone please tell what Web Host is the best one for a medium commercial website? I design a Realtor Online website for a friend. He asks me to help him find a good web host but I really have no idea what host is the good one out there. There are plenty of good hosts out there, you need to define your requirements before you decide on a host.

Make a list : How much disk space will you require, how much bandwidth do you expect to use,…. do you need cgi, php, JSP….. Once you make your list, you can start shopping for a host that can meet your needs. At least with someone like Yahoo, you can be guarenteed reliable service instead of them deciding to pull the plug randomly. I guess you could go for their Starter package, which gives you 100MB space plus 15GB transfer, for $14.95 Setup $14.95/month. And then, I don’t know if you can still do this, but you could get an free webhosting account and store some pictures on there that aren’t accessed as much.

I’m not sure of the rest of the details, but, I presume it being Yahoo, they will be reliable and fast. Its been running 8 to 9 GB a month, but I would like a service which could handle at least 12 GB without going anything like outrageous with prices to be on the safe side. Also, as far as actual size goes, right now its around 105 MB and slowly climbing. I would hope to be able to easily sustain 150 MB as a minimum.

Document Object Model (DOM) XML parser for PHP

DOMIT! is an XML parser for PHP. It is lightweight, fast, and implements a generous subset of the DOM Level 1 specification. The primary goal of DOMIT! is to provide PHP developers with a standards-compliant means of working with XML, thus ensuring more portable and communicable code. DOMIT! is not an extension; it is written purely in PHP and should therefore run on any Web hosting platform with PHP 4 and above installed. DOMIT! requires coupling with a SAX parser.

You can use either the SAXY parser that comes bundled with DOMIT! or the Expat parser that is included in most later PHP distributions. This version contains several new utility methods: a getElementsByPath method, which allows access to element nodes using “path”-like expressions, a loadXML method, which loads an XML file from the specified path, a saveXML method, which saves a DOM document to the specified XML file, and a parsedBy method, which informs you whether parsing occurred in conjunction with either the Expat or SAXY parser. This version provides several new methods for the safe manipulation of element attributes.

The following methods have been added: getAttribute (returns the value of the named attribute), setAttribute (sets the named attribute to the specified value), removeAttribute (removes the named attribute), and hasAttribute (determines whether the specified attribute exists). A new version of the SAXY parser (a replacement for Expat) is bundled with this version. This fixes a bug where attributes were ignored if encased in single quotes. This release has been optimized for performance; there are measurable differences in speed across all platforms, and a problem that caused highly degraded performance on Celeron processors has been remedied.

Domain Name and Web Hosting

Depending on what you want on your webpage you can use MS-Word to create one. If you only want to present information that’s the way to go. If you want to start accepting data and verifying entries then you’ll need something more involved. As mentioned, many of the drag and drop programs will generate a shitload of useless code. Many programmers will use the drag and drop development tools just to make sure things look pretty then go in and hack out all the code that will never be executed.

When you read the fine print, the domain name is “usualy” locked in with your web hosting package which means you can’t run off to a proper web hosting location with your domain name when you feel you want to do more with your website. I didn’t get a chance to check out baremetal but some of the people I host for had to change their domain names because they couldn’t get the DNS repointed to anywhere other than the company’s servers.. sorta locks ya in for a while.. Just be sure to read all the fine print and ask the questions.. once your business is established around the domain name, it sucks not having full control of it.

I can’t give q suggestion for web hosting but will say to be sure to read all the agreement for any low-cost hosting. You may be stuck with unwanted ads on your site, hidden fees, limited-time offers, etc. The problem with MS-Word is that it won’t add “Alt” tags for you, to my knowledge. I can only assume that Microsoft does not hire handicapped programmers.

Web hosting & web page building

If you are looking to get someone to host your domain for you, your connection isn’t relevant. If you are looking to do your own hosting, you need someone to put your host entry in their domain name servers, and the registrar that registered your domain has to update the record to say who is running the domain name server that has your entry in it. (Usually people who provide hosting services can also register domains for you, but they dont have to be the same people as those who you registered your domain with).

Ok that’s the theory, here’s the practice. Companys such as dyndns.org can register a .com for you and do the dns thing for ~35 bucks per year. Importantly they are geared up to deal with the fact that your ISP may have given you a dynamic IP address ( one which may change every 24 hours ). This is a bummer for hosting, since it means that the domain name server will need to be updated every 24 hours, but dyndns.org have software which you can run which will do this for you – it spots when your ISP has changed the address and tells dyndns.

Or alternatively, your broadband firewall router may do it for you ( I have 2 which know about dyndns.org ). You don’t have a firewall router ? You are insane. If you want to play for free, you can. RoadRunner, like Cox, frown upon users running servers at home. Some actually block inbound port 80 (http) preventing you from running a server on that standard port. Unless you buy the commercial rate connection. Usually it’s cheaper to have someone else host.
